Impressive haul of nine wickets for 143 runs on debut by medium-pacer Debasis Mohanty helped Orissa draw their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match against Bengal at Eden Gardens in Calcutta today. However, Bengal secured five points by taking first-innings lead, while Orissa settled with three points.
Orissa opening batsman P Jayachandra also made his first-class debut in this match. Debasis Mohanty bagged five wickets for 52 runs as Orissa bowled out formidable Bengal, who chose to bat after winning the toss, for a modest total of 188 in the first innings. Orissa captain Ranjib Biswal provided good support to Debasis from the other end, capturing three wickets for 47 runs.
But the advantage of restricting Bengal to a below-200 total went in vain as Orissa were all out for 181 and conceded a slender but vital first-innings lead of seven runs. Rashmi Ranjan Parida was the top scorer for Orissa with 46 runs to his name. Narendra Hirwani emerged most successful Bengal bowler, pocketing six wickets for 86 runs.
Bengal further consolidated their position by declaring the second innings at 293 for nine, which gave them an overall lead of 300 runs. Among Orissa bowlers, Debasis Mohanty and Ranjib Biswal once again proved successful, bagging four wickets each.
The fourth and last-day proceedings proved to be hard-fought affair with Bengal declaring their second innings after resuming at the overnight score of 218 for six. Capitalising on home conditions, Bengal made a spirited attempt to win the match outright.
But Orissa spoiled the hopes of the home team by putting up competent performance in the second innings. Riding on a half-century by Shiv Sundar Das, Orissa were 185 for five when the matches ended in a draw. Das passed 1000 runs in first-class matches when he reached 67.
